How to Remove Carpet Stains: The Right Way
Before You Start: Follow These 5 Golden Rules
✅ Act Fast – The sooner you treat the stain, the better your chances of removing it.
✅ Blot, Don’t Scrub – Scrubbing spreads the stain and damages carpet fibers.
✅ Use Cold or Lukewarm Water – Hot water can set stains permanently.
✅ Always Test First – Before using any cleaner, test it on a hidden area of the carpet.
✅ Know Your Carpet Type – Some chemicals can damage wool carpets (noted below).
How to Remove Common Carpet Stains
1. Wine Stains (Red & White Wine) 🍇
🔹 Safe for: Synthetic & wool carpets
🔹 What You Need: Dishwashing liquid, white vinegar, warm water, clean cloth
🔹 Steps:
1️⃣ Blot (don’t rub) the stain with a dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible.
2️⃣ Mix 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid with 2 cups warm water.
3️⃣ Dab the stain with the dish soap solution, using a clean cloth, and let it sit for 5 minutes.
4️⃣ Blot with a dry cloth to lift the stain.
5️⃣ If the stain remains, mix 1 part white vinegar with 2 parts water, apply lightly, and blot.
6️⃣ Blot with a damp cloth (plain water) to rinse, then dry with a towel.
💡 For Wool Carpets: Avoid over-wetting—use a damp cloth rather than soaking the area.
2. Coffee Stains ☕
🔹 Safe for: Synthetic & wool carpets
🔹 What You Need: Dishwashing liquid, warm water, clean cloth
🔹 Steps:
1️⃣ Blot up as much coffee as possible with a dry cloth or paper towel.
2️⃣ Mix 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid with 2 cups warm water.
3️⃣ Dab the stain with the soapy solution and let it sit for 5 minutes.
4️⃣ Blot again with a clean damp cloth to remove any residue.
5️⃣ Dry the area with a towel.
💡 Why no vinegar? Coffee contains tannins, which are better broken down with dish soap rather than vinegar.

3. Pet Urine Stains & Odors 🐶🐱

🔹 What You Need: Enzyme cleaner (for odors), white vinegar (optional)
🔹 Steps:
1️⃣ Blot up as much urine as possible with paper towels.
2️⃣ If you have an enzyme cleaner, spray it on the stain and let it sit.
3️⃣ If no enzyme cleaner is available, mix equal parts vinegar & water, apply lightly, and blot.
4️⃣ Blot dry with a towel and let the area air out.
